About Taxon Descriptions

In the descriptions of species for which we have comprehensive understanding, we have adopted a format that details the states of approximately 40-45 traits across the plant body, with traits described in parallel across all species. Traits focus mainly on the leaves, chasmogamous flowers, cleistogamous capsules, and seeds. For species about which we know less at the moment, descriptions will unfortunately be more telegraphic, but we will update these with new information as it becomes available and will announce such changes on the homepage.

The few infraspecific taxa recognized here have their own webpage, which can be accessed directly through the "keys" webpages or "names" webpages, but their names are also listed as hyperlinks above the description on the webpage of the species to which they belong. Clicking on the hyperlink will take you to the webpage of an infraspecific taxon. The description of the species covers all the variability and other aspects of the infraspecific taxa within that species, while specifics of each infraspecific taxon are addressed in the webpage for the infraspecific taxon. Similarly, anomalous variants and known taxa belonging to a species complex are associated with the species complex, the latter having a description that expresses all variability of the variants and known taxa contained within the species complex. The variants and known taxa have their own webpages, accessed directly through the "keys" or "names" webpages, and their hyperlinked names are listed above the description of the species complex.
