Welcome to the "Violets (Violaceae) of the Great Plains and Eastern North America" website!

This is a new website, designed to be a comprehensive resource on the 95 currently known violet taxa in our region, with some information pertinent to continental North America. All boldface items in the dropdown menus have active links to their webpages. Some webpages (those not in boldface) need to be completed. See "About this website" under the "About" menu (which is under the "Other" menu in tablet/cellphone format) for more details.

The website has been formatted to be "responsive", with a somewhat different format for certain webpages viewed in laptap and desktop computers and larger tablets held horizontally, versus those viewed in vertically held tablets and cellphones. Currently, the dropdown submenus "stick" open in tablet and cellphone view; just click anywhere outside the dropdown menus and they will close. I am hunting for a fix to correct this. The website has been tested and displays properly in Chrome (both computer and cellphone), Edge, and Firefox browsers, and on a Samsung Galaxy S7 cellphone, a Kindle Fire tablet Asus Zenpad 10, a Lenovo laptop and a Lenovo desktop. The website DOES NOT display properly in Internet Explorer, which is infamous for many bugs and issues (use a different browser). Although the website is fully functional with a cellphone, the keys and taxon pages (most of which have several images) are best viewed in a tablet or computer.

To advance science through visitors like you, we (fearlessly or foolishly) present our current unpublished information and some of our research here, including several undescribed species and many uncertain taxa which will likely prove with further study to be undescribed species. We do this to provide a comprehensive resource on what we think we know taxonomically and biologically about violets in our region, to help you to identify and learn more about our violet flora. We also hope that it will inspire you to join us in studying the violets. However, the information on this website, and the images (most of which have been graciously donated to us for this website), must not be used without explicit approval by Harvey Ballard, his co-authors, or the many gracious contributors.
