Applied Dynamical Systems

COURSE CONTENT:
A survey of applied dynamical systems for Scientists, Engineers and Mathematicians with an emphasis on continuous time models.
TEXTBOOK:
Geoffrey R. Goodson; Chaotic Dynamics: Fractals, Tilings, and Substitutions. First edition. Cambridge University Press, 2017.
SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:
Handouts containing lectures on additional topics not covered by the textbook, and additional exercises will be posted by the instructor at the URL https://people.ohio.edu/just/DynSys19/supplements/.
PREREQUISITES:
For undergraduate section: MATH 3400 and (3200 or 3210).
GRADING:
There will be a total of 300 points. Two term tests will be given, worth 50 points each, and a final exam worth 100 points. Graded homework assignments will count for up to 100 points total. The final will be comprehensive. No electronic devices are allowed on the tests and on the final.
The tests and the final will contain some additional or modified questions for the graduate section of the course.
If you had a valid cause of absence (see your student handbook for definition), you will have an opportunity to write a make-up final or test. Excuses submitted after the test has been given will not be accepted. All excused absences for tests and the final must be properly documented.
You may earn additional percentage points by active class participation.
The points will be converted into letter grades as follows: There will be no curving. Tests and the final may contain multi-step problems with no partial credit given for subsequent steps if the first step is wrong.

CHEATING:
Don't. The penalty may be an F for the course.
ATTENDANCE:
Is mandatory. Each student will start out with six bonus points for perfect attendance; subsequently one point will be deducted for each unexcused absence. Notifications of excused absences must be submitted prior to the missed class period.
HOMEWORK:
The daily homework assignments will be posted at the URL: https://people.ohio.edu/just/DynSys19/homework.html.
Some homework assignments will be be collected and graded; due dates will be specified at the web page listed above. This page will also specify whether a given homework assignment is supposed to be done individually or by working in a group.
