What is the HTC program in CSD?

The HTC program in CSD is a two and a half year program that starts in the spring semester of sophomore year. The program provides qualified students with a research-oriented undergraduate experience through individualized training in hearing, speech and language sciences.

How is the HTC program different from the traditional baccalaureate program in CSD?

In addition to coursework, the HTC program includes a set of tutorials, in which students actively participate in one-to-one or small group interactions with faculty tutors. The HTC program also requires a senior thesis. Students are required to maintain a minimum of 3.5 overall GPA during their course of study.

Will I graduate earlier or later in the HTC program compared to the traditional baccalaureate program?

The HTC program is designed for the same length of study as the traditional program. The program starts in the spring semester of sophomore year, when students will participate in a tutorial on faculty research exploration. Junior year will be used for coursework and tutorials with the aim of identifying a focused area of research and thesis advisor. Senior year will be used for coursework and thesis research.

Is the HTC program the right program for me?

Consider if the tutorial mode fits your learning style. The HTC program emphasizes research and independent learning. If you are more comfortable with guided and highly structured learning, you will not benefit from the HTC program.

How do I apply?

Applications are accepted from current Ohio University students only. Application deadline is October 1. CSD majors achieving the sophomore status by the end of their first year are eligible to apply. Students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher will be invited to attend an information meeting in early fall to evaluate their fit for the program.

In accordance with the on-campus transfer guidelines set forth by the Honors Tutorial College, students interested in applying should submit the following materials:

  1. A current DARS
  2. A statement of purpose discussing the reasons for pursuing the HTC program, their qualifications and fit, and the general content area for the proposed thesis research
  3. A writing sample from any college course
  4. A completed endorsement form by a CSD faculty member who is familiar with their academic work

Applications should be submitted by the deadline (October 1) to:
