Linear and Nonlinear Optimization

COURSE CONTENT:

Optimization of functions subject to equality and inequality constraints. Formulation of linear programming problems and solutions by the simplex method. Related topics such as sensitivity analysis, duality theory and network optimization. Applications of linear programming. Introduction to nonlinear programming techniques.

TEXTBOOK:

Introduction to Operations Research, by Frederick Hillier and Gerald Lieberman (optional).

GRADING:

Two preliminary tests worth 20% each, final exam worth 35% of your final mark.

Homework 20%, class participation 5%. Final grades will be determined from the following scale: 90-100 A, 78-90 B, 66-78 C, 54-66 D.

CHEATING:

ATTENDANCE:

Strongly recommended. Students are responsible for all information and material given in class.

HOMEWORK:

There will be about 5 homework assignments. Only selected homework problems will be collected and graded. The homework assignments will be posted at https://people.ohio.edu/melkonia/math4620/homework.html.
